Streptococcus salivarlus subsp.thermophius previous name s, thermoohius, is characterized as gram-posltive, anaerobic,catalase-negatve, rodshaped, non-spore forming, and non-motile.lt is also capable of generating energy, in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), by aerobicrespiration with the presence of oxygen; however, without the presence of oxygen, it stil can produce ATp through fermentaton.S. thermophilus lacks cytochrome, oxidase, and catalase enzymes, lt does not have motlty and it does not form spores. Although s. thermophilus isclosely related to other pathogenic streptococci lsuch as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes, s. thermophilus is clasifed asa non-pathogenic, alpha-hemolytic species that is part of the viridians group. s, thermophilus is widely used as an essential bacteriumfor fermentation and producton of dairy products together with L, bulgaricus for long time, e.g: yoghurt, cheese and other fermented dairyproducts (S40 bilion industry).
