S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is an important bioactive substance that occurs naturally in the human body, and its reduced level can cause a series of hazards, especially cholestasis.
SAMe is an important physiologically active substance in human body, which has a wide range of functions, including metal detoxification and catecholamine metabolism, membrane fluidity, gene expression and cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis. As an important metabolic pleiotropic molecule, it plays an important role based on the transmethylation, transsulfuration and transpropylamino of methyl group, sulfur group and propylamino group in the SAMe structure in the metabolic pathway.
Based on these three mechanisms of action (transmethylation, transthiosylation, and transpropylaminosylation), SAMe plays an important role in patients with hepatocellular cholestatic liver disease, such as alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, drug-induced cholestasis, and intrahepatic cholestasis during pregnancy.
