Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a natural chemical compound which is the ester of caffeic acid and (-)-quinic acid. It is an important
biosynthetic intermediate. Chlorogenic acid is an important intermediate in lignin biosynthesis. This compound, known as an
antioxidant, may also slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream after a meal.
Eucommia ulmoides oliv is a member of the Eucommiaceae family and contains high levels of chlorogenic acid. chlorogenic acid, also known as 3-CAR-Feoyquinic acid, is a phenylpropanoid substance synthesized by the intermediate product of pentose phosphate pathway (HMS) in the process of aerobic respiration in plants (Gao Jinming et al., 1999). Recent studies have shown that chlorogenic acid content in Eucommia leaves is relatively high, up to 1 ~ 5.5 (Zang Youwei, 1989). Chlorogenic acid has a variety of pharmacological effects .
