What is Ergosterol?
    An important phytosterol (see steroids). The molecular formula is C28H44O. It exists in yeast and ergot. White flake or needle crystal. Melting point is 168ºC (crystallization with 1.5 mol of water), boiling point is 250ºC (0.01 mm Hg), and specific rotation is-135 (chloroform, c = 1.2). Soluble in benzene and chloroform. Ergosterol undergoes a series of changes after being irradiated by ultraviolet rays to produce vitamin D2. 22,23-dihydroergosterol, a derivative of ergosterol, is transformed into vitamin D4 after ultraviolet irradiation.

Functions of Ergosterol:
1. Berberine is used for damp-heat syndrome of the large intestine manifested as diarrhea, dysenteryand tenesmus.

2. Berberine is used for acute febrile diseases with exces-sive pathogenic fire and heat manifested ashigh fever, dysphoria,unconsciousness anddelirium.
