Senna Leaf comes from the plant known by the Latin botanical name of Senna alexandrina. It is also commonly known as wild senna, locust plant and American senna.
Senna contains glycosides, which are a group of organic compounds that are commonly found in plants. These compounds work as a laxative by smoothing the muscles as digested food moves through the intestines. This helps to enhance the stool volume and move it out of the colon. The process is caused by the chain of fatty acids that promote digestion, fermentation, and successfully converting the glycosides into a purgative agent.
The active ingredient in senna is called sennoside. The constituent molecules are converted in the colon by microorganisms into another substance, anthrone rhein, which possesses beneficial effects to stimulate colonic activity (which accelerates bowel movements and improves digestion) and increases fluid secretion. The laxative effect of sennoside and its active metabolite, anthrone rhein, are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes in the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. A push-pull tightening exercise that will stimulate the colon.
In addition, stimulation of active chloride secretion increased intestinal water and electrolyte content. These changes in active electrolyte transport depend on the elemental calcium on the serosal surface. The laxative effect of sennoside is in part through stimulation of colonic fluid and electrolyte secretion, and this secretory capacity is mediated by stimulation of endogenous prostaglandin formation. Pudose can be prepared as an enema or suppository or mixed with a stool softener or bulk fiber laxative to form a combined laxative.
