Function of Cholic Acid
1. Promote the digestion and absorption of lipids
Bile acids contain hydrophilic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, as well as hydrophobic methyl and hydrocarbon nuclei. At the same time, the steric coordination of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups are both α, so the main configuration of bile acid has both hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. Tonic promotes lipid emulsification.
2. Inhibit the precipitation of cholesterol in bile (calculi)
Bile acids can also prevent the formation of gallstones. Cholesterol is hardly soluble in water. When bile is discharged into the gallbladder for storage, the bile is concentrated in the gallbladder, and cholesterol is easy to precipitate. However, because the bile contains bile salts and lecithin, cholesterol can be dispersed to form soluble micelles, and it is not easy to precipitate and form stones.
3. The physiological functions of bile acids can be summarized as: influence on bile secretion; influence on lipid absorption; influence on colon function.
