Gardenia extract genipin is the active ingredient in the fruit of gardenia extract. Genipin, an extract of Gardenia, is an excellent natural cross-linking agent for cross-linking protein, collagen, gelatin, and chitosan. Gardenia extract Jing is generally extracted from gardenia geniposide, hydrolyzed with β-glucosidase, extracted with ether, concentrated in vacuo, and recrystallized to obtain geniposide. Genipin, an extract of Gardenia, can also be produced by microbial transformation.
