Azelaic acid is a dermatological drug used to treat acne, melasma and skin melanin deposits. It is also an important organic synthesis intermediate, used in plastics, rubber and other industries for the synthesis of plasticizers, in aviation oil for the synthesis of low-temperature high-speed lubricants, electrolytic capacitors manufacturing and other important applications. At present, the main production method is to prepare azelaic acid from unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid and corresponding triglycerides such as castor oil and cotton seed oil.
White to yellowish monoclinic prism, acicular crystal or powder. The melting point is 106.5ºC, the boiling point is >360 (partial decomposition), 226ºC (1.33kPa), 287ºC (Chemicalbook13.3kPa), the relative density is 1.225(25/4ºC), the refractive index is 1.4303(111ºC). Soluble in hot water, alcohol and hot benzene, slightly soluble in water, ether and benzene.
