The chemical name of acetaminophen is N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide, and the trade name is paracetamol. It belongs to the acetan-ilide class of antipyretic and analgesic. In 1878, it was first synthesized by Morse and in 1893, it was first used in clinical practice by Vonmering. It became an over-the-counter drug in 1955 in the United States and began to be produced in China in the late 1950s. Its appearance is white crystalline or crystalline powder, melting point 168 ~ 172ºC, odorless, slightly bitter taste, soluble in hot water or ethanol, dissolved in ace-tone, almost insoluble in cold water and petro-leum ether. Stable below 45ºC, but if exposed to wet air will hydrolyze into aminophenols, and then further oxidation, color gradually turned pink, brown, and finally into black, so it should be stored in a cold and dry place sealed.
