Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin, because the green leaves are very rich in the name, also known as pteroylglutamate. There are several forms in nature, and its parent compound is a combination of pteridine, p-aminobenzoic acid and glutamic acid.
Folic acid contains one or more glutamyl groups, and naturally occurring folic acid is mostly in the polyglutamate form. The bioactive form of folic acid is tetrahydrofolic acid. Folic acid is a yellow crystal, slightly soluble in water, but its sodium salt is very soluble in water. Insoluble in ethanol. It is easily destroyed in acidic solution, unstable to heat, easy to lose at room temperature, and easily destroyed in light.
Folic acid is actively absorbed in the body and passively absorbed by diffusion, mainly in the upper part of the small intestine. The absorption rate of reduced folic acid is higher, the more glutamyl group, the lower the absorption rate, glucose and vitamin C can promote the absorption. The absorbed folic acid is stored in the intestinal wall, liver, bone marrow and other tissues in the body, and is reduced by folate reductase with the participation of NADPH to tetrahydrofolate (THFA or FH4) with physiological activity, which is involved in the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine. Therefore, folic acid plays an important role in protein synthesis, cell division and growth, and promotes the formation of normal red blood cells. Deficiency can lead to reduced production of hemoglobin in red blood cells, cell maturation is blocked, resulting in megaloblastic anemia.
