Vitamin B12, referred to as VB12, also known as cobalamin, one of the B vitamins, is a class of cobalt-containing complex organic compounds, the trivalent cobalt contained in the porphyrin-like gollinoid ring plane center.
It is the largest and most complex vitamin molecule found and the only one containing metal ions. Its crystallization is red, so it is also called red vitamin.
Plants do not contain VB12 and cannot make it. Liver is the best source of VB12, followed by milk, meat, eggs, fish and so on. VB12 is a necessary coenzyme in the synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid. Deficiency of VB12 in vivo can cause pathological changes in the nervous system such as peripheral nerve and central encephalopathy.
