Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that belongs to the B vitamin group, also known as Vitamin H or vitamin B7. It is essential for the synthesis of vitamin C and is essential for the proper metabolism of fats and proteins. Biotin plays a variety of roles in the human body, including maintaining the health of natural growth, development and normal human functions. It is a coenzyme of many carboxylases and participates in the metabolic process of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and nucleic acids.
Food sources of biotin include milk, liver, eggs (egg yolks), and some vegetables. The content is higher in animal liver, egg yolk, yeast and fresh milk, but less in grain, meat and fruit. Biotin in food is usually in a protein-bound state and needs to be produced free biotin by biotinase in the gut to play its role.
